Deep Seek AI: A Powerful Tool with Important Considerations for County Staff

Deep Seek AI is quickly gaining recognition as an incredibly powerful tool for data analysis, automation, and predictive modeling. Its intuitive interface and robust capabilities make it an attractive option for streamlining workflows and enhancing decision-making processes. However, while the potential of Deep Seek AI is undeniable, there are critical considerations for county staff to keep in mind before adopting the tool.

Concerns with Hosted and Phone App Versions

Deep Seek AI's primary hosted platform and phone app versions are currently managed and controlled by a Chinese company. This raises concerns about data security and privacy, especially when dealing with sensitive information that could impact our county operations and public trust.

It’s essential to prioritize the safety and integrity of our data systems. While there is no direct evidence of misuse, the geopolitical landscape surrounding data privacy and technology use has led to increased scrutiny of tools hosted by companies in certain jurisdictions. As such, we strongly advise county staff NOT to use the hosted or phone app versions of Deep Seek AI until further notice.

Open-Source Alternatives Are Emerging

Fortunately, the open-source community is stepping up, and alternative versions of Deep Seek AI are beginning to emerge. These versions are hosted by non-Chinese companies and are designed with transparency and security in mind. While these alternatives are still in their infancy, we are actively vetting them to ensure they meet our high standards for security, reliability, and compliance with county data policies.

Our goal is to provide staff with tools that are not only effective but also align with our commitment to safeguarding public data. We will continue to monitor and evaluate these emerging solutions and provide updates as vetted options become available.

Next Steps

For now, we recommend the following:

  1. Avoid the hosted and phone app versions of Deep Seek AI to ensure data security and maintain public trust.

  2. Stay tuned for updates as we vet alternative, secure open-source versions of the tool.

  3. Reach out with questions or concerns if you’re unsure about the use of specific AI tools in your department.

By exercising caution and waiting for trusted alternatives, we can ensure that the benefits of AI technology are leveraged without compromising the integrity of our systems. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to responsible technology use.
